In 2008 a new edition of the UK standard for
the safety of electrical installations, BS 7671, came into effect.
This standard calls for virtually all electrical circuits installed
in homes since then to be provided with additional protection by
means of an RCD.
17th Edition Split load consumer unit with a main switch and two
independently fed RCDs to allow for discrimination against unwanted
tripping. If required, the main switch directly feeds a small number
of circuits. The main switch also independently feeds two RCDs each
with a number of circuits.
The circuits on the new consumer units are protected by two residual
current devices. Power and lighting circuits for the same floor
are split between the RCDs on different sides of the board. This
is so that in the event of a fault all the circuits on a particular
floor are not cut-off from the supply.Fuse Board Upgrades, We replace
your existing fuseboard with the modern Consumer Unit. To include
additional circuits may be required for a house extension.
The Consumer Units contain a Main Isolator, together with Circuit
Breakers & Residual Current Devices, which together provide
a far greater level of protection than re-wirable fuses.
Circuit Breakers are mechanical switches that incorporate thermal
& magnetic circuit protection giving accurate & fast disconnection
in the case of a fault.
Residual Current Devices are earth fault safety
trips that monitor parts of the installation or individual
circuit for earth leakage currents.
